Brighton Rain

about

I'm currently in Brighton at a little B&B. Well, that's what it calls itself but the breakfast part is really just some bananas and chocolate, which, depending on my mood suits me okay. ;)

I woke up very late, and in a dark mood. I looked out at the ocean from my window, the skies overcast with grey, and felt a wave of deep home-sickness.

I am sort of stuck here in the UK, until the end of this month. I have had to re-route my trip, excluding my earlier plans to follow some friends through parts of the Netherlands and Germany... instead I am picking up extra shows in London, which seems like a good business move. But the tourist part of me wants to see Copenhagen! Sigh. But between London shows I still plan to go north into Scotland and Ireland. And then back to Berlin before heading homeward! Plans must change, and they probably will yet again.

So this is my state of mind, and perhaps it explains the experimental attitude I took to this recording. I sat with my guitar and discovered some new chords. I put some chorus and delay on it, so it sounds like Hejira-era-Joni to me, somewhat. So be it! And then I improvised some words over the changes. It is very free-form. It sits alongside 'Swallowed Whole' in my discography (if you want to hear it's on my soundcloud page.)

I may do a field recording of the gulls by the ocean to overdub. It might be overkill but we will see.

ps- I AM still having a good time, btw, haha. I'm just being a moody singer-songwriter today!

lyrics

Rain, Rain, Rain, Rain
You have me floating, floating...
Homeward, homeward...

My heart sick with foreign ships
You got me floating, floating...

Ocean cold like
My old notion of living

I'm keeping to myself
Keeping to myself
Reflecting the places I've been
No desire of returning
Returning...
Home
Rain

Colleen Brown Edmonton, Alberta

Often compared to Heart and Joni Mitchell, multi-instrumentalist Colleen Brown writes folk-pop songs about love, fate, and psychic retooling. The Globe and Mail declares “The talents of this musician shine like a beacon. Her boldly written originals… have the good bones and great melodic rhythm of classic big-screen pop songs” ... more
