about

I've been thinking a lot about what it means to be vulnerable.

This pandemic has highlighted vulnerabilities in parts of our lives we probably thought were our strengths, or that we might count as achievements. Things like having a job, a house, a family, being able to travel, having long-term plans. These things might give us comfort in 'normal' times, or when they feel balanced, but now with the uncertainty of things, and the imbalance of things, they might be what cause the most stress.

Having makes us vulnerable to Losing.

And that's a good thing. It shows us what we really value.

I've also thought a lot about what it means to feel insecure.

I've spent a good deal of my adult life stressed about money. I've been transient and unmoored through much of it. There was a time when I was barely functioning because of it. It's an uncomfortable way to be, but these days, it is familiar. I guess I've adapted.

When you feel disconnected and unsure of your future it's really easy to feel worthless, to feel like a failure. I've been wrestling with that demon for a long time now, and the most important thing I learned when I was in that state is - be present, and be gentle.

Be gentle with yourself. Be gentle with others.

I wish I had something more rock'n'roll/cool to say, but today you're dealing with Earnest Colleen. I'll be drinking green smoothies and downward-dogging over here if you need me.

lyrics

This is not a war
This is not a marathon
There is no battle
There is only to be here
In this moment

Gentle
Gentle

Life is full of edges
Cutting every corner
We get hurt
We get defensive
But it only makes things harder

Our human condition
Keeps us naked
So vulnerable
So alone

Be Gentle
Gentle

Trust that voice
That whispers quiet
It comes first
Before your worry
It knows how your neighbour suffers
And it feels it in your middle
In your centre

Be Gentle
Be Gentle
