Old Fashioned (The Olden Ways)

about

I don’t know about you, but all these recent changes have made me reconsider the trajectory of my life, and how I want to spend my time on earth.
What I want my legacy to be. What I want my generation’s legacy to be.
I can't shake the feeling that this is a turning point.
As much as I love the technology I use everyday (that facilitated this home recording!) I am questioning all our supposed societal progress.
I’m thinking about growing a garden, and canning fruit. I’m returning to old hobbies like sewing and dancing.
I’m thinking about what community and family mean to me.
I’m thinking about all the decisions I have put off making, and how life has intervened.

Maybe when you listen to this song, you could imagine me as our childhood friend Mr. Rogers, donning a cardigan, gazing warmly into the camera at you, with a reassuring smile.

With all the love and tenderness,

cb<3

(PS - normally the background noise of traffic would be bleeding into my microphone, but at the end of the song today you will hear birds chirping.)

lyrics

The Olden Ways are coming
Our future's in the past
My darling friends will we pretend
That we can go back

Like the grey streaks in my hair
Like these little lines
I can cover up the clues
But I can't turn back time

Can we just imagine
A different way to be
To look upon the face of friends
And strangers just as sweet
Can we just imagine

Remember when we were little ones
And we'd make up a game
When the thunder storms were rolling in
And we'd go play out in the rain

We were squealing in the tremors
And we were hiding from the lights
What the Mother gave us
Now we've got to set it right
So history will not repeat
This heavy troubled year

Let's use imagination
Let's try to see things clear
The Olden Ways are coming
Again

about

Colleen Brown Edmonton, Alberta

Often compared to Heart and Joni Mitchell, multi-instrumentalist Colleen Brown writes folk-pop songs about love, fate, and psychic retooling. The Globe and Mail declares “The talents of this musician shine like a beacon. Her boldly written originals… have the good bones and great melodic rhythm of classic big-screen pop songs” ... more
